Especially if you are going through a bunch of Free Themes but also if you are trying and adapting a Premium theme; the plugin Theme Test Drive is really useful. It lets an admin (or a query parameter) turn the whole site into the other theme. You still only have the widgets you get into the current sidebars, but it is really helpful if you are trying to tweak things in an “offline” mode.
